Weekly Message from Becky Cress, Director of Children’s, Youth Faith Formation
Hello there everybody!
Have you ever noticed that there are certain things in church that we do the same every Sunday? There is always a sermon, we always sing hymns, and we always take Holy Communion. Can you think of anything else that we do every Sunday? What are some of the things that change from Sunday to Sunday?
One of the things that we do exactly the same every time we worship is that we recite the Apostle’s Creed. You might even know it by heart:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Now look back: How many parts are there to the creed? Reread the first sentence of each part. Why do you think that reciting this creed is so important that we all do so every Sunday?

This Sunday we remember the Holy Trinity. Tri- means three; so when we speak of the Trinity, we are talking about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As Christians we believe that each of these beings are God. Not only that, but we believe that there is only one God, so that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are actually one God: the Three-In-One. Confusing? Yes! Here are some bits from another creed, the Nicene Creed – I think it does a good job describing God as the Trinity:
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty…
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father…
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified…
Still confused? That’s okay! Some things about God are unknowable to us as humans. This Sunday let us wonder and stand in awe of God’s mysterious miracle – the Three-In-One!
Dear God, thank you for all of you, the Holy Trinity. May the will of the Father be done, the love of Jesus fill us and the Holy Spirit guide us all the days of our lives. In your name we pray, Amen.
